A visit from Klein Escherde

Members of the volunteer fire department from Klein Escherde paid us a visit. They wanted to find out more about our work. The visitors were in good hands with master carpenter Klaus Algermissen – he also lives in Klein Escherde. A round of talks and coffee rounded off the tour of the workshops and the site.

Once again, the “Lernen-Helfen-Leben” association asked us to procure a used container for the transportation of a minibus and various tools and machines and to load it after repairs. It may be possible to ship the 40′ container in November.

Presentation on project in Chad

Accompanied by Jürgen Marquardt, 1st Chairman of the Lernen-Helfen-Leben association, we were once again visited by the graduate engineers Abdallah Diop and his wife Ursula Nica. Both are planning to set up an eco-camp and an educational facility in N’Djamene, Chad, on 10 hectares of land they have already purchased. An experimental garden is planned where visitors and trainees can learn about the methods and benefits of composting.

As part of a training event, our colleagues received a very interesting presentation on the conditions in Chad and the project. It was agreed to pack and ship a container with machines and equipment for this project at the beginning of 2012.

Boat loaded for Burundi

After many difficulties in organizing the transport of the fishing boat to Burundi, which had been refurbished together with the Labora youth workshop as part of the “Stärken vor Ort” project, we were finally successful: Mr. Dietrich von Berg, Honorary Consul of Burundi, promised support from the “Helfen Direkt e.V.” association.

On August 2, the time had come and we were able to load the boat. This was preceded by many discussions and deliberations in our workshops. There was a lot of concern that the boat would not fit into the container. In the end, however, a good solution was found.

The container will be transported to Dar es Salaam on the container ship “Susan Maersk” and will then travel overland across Tanzania to Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi.

They were very interested to learn how Arbeit und Dritte Welt built a workshop from over 90% recycled materials.

8 boxes of work clothing

Jutta Schwarzer, who retired at the end of last month as Managing Director of the Hildesheim-South Lower Saxony Chamber of Crafts, has long supported the employees of Arbeit und Dritte Welt.

She has already twice organized a collection of high-quality winter clothing, such as woollen sweaters and warm jackets, among the chamber’s employees. Today she handed over 8 boxes of work clothes to our chairman Fred Schulz and warehouse manager Jürgen Dittmer. We were very pleased about this.

Pupils visit the solar lamp workshop

Under the guidance of their teacher Birgit Deike, a class from the Albertus Magnus School visited us and learned about the construction of solar lamps from industrial scrap from workshop manager Peter Wein.

As the pupils had all kinds of previous knowledge, there was a lively discussion for which there was barely enough time.
