After some back and forth, the container we sent with lots of donated goods for Hogar de Christo has finally been taken out of the port of Valparaiso and transported to its destination in Santiago.
We were very happy when we received photos of the unloading today.
Under the leadership of the Eritrean Association for the Physically Disabled in Stuttgart e.V., we were partners in a project that was completely new to us and to everyone else involved: at the same time, a 40′ container was loaded in Freiburg, Stuttgart and Hildesheim with relief supplies for the Eritrean Association of the War Disabled and Physically Disabled (EWDVA) to Massawa.
Our task was to send 290 bicycles, spare parts, specialist books and office supplies. With the support of the Labora youth workshop, a large quantity of bicycles was collected. The books were brought to us directly from Mannheim by Cahsai Tewelde and Habte Ghebrai.
The container was loaded in 2 hours and was able to continue its journey to the free port of Hamburg.
The 3 containers will then be transported from the port of Massawa in Eritrea to Asmara. EWDVA operates workshops there – so the people working there have a lot to do.
We were delighted to see our old friend Cahsai Tewelde again, who had already supported the founding of our association in 1995 with help and advice. Together with Habte Ghebrai, he had set off from Mannheim to bring specialist books for the planned transport of donations to Ertitrea.
A storage shed should help to improve order on our premises.
Our metal workshop produced 9 poster holders on behalf of Hildesheim Marketing. These will be used on Andreaskirchplatz as part of the “Leben lernen – Lernen leben” (“Learn to live – live to learn”) campaign.
Our metalworking shop produced a nesting aid for the Paul Feindt Foundation. It is to be installed on the soon to be renovated chimney of the historic cement factory in Henneckenrode.
Everyone hopes that the white stork will accept the invitation next year.
The Rural Youth Association in Ghana e.V. – a partner of Lower Saxony Rural Youth – has been collecting relief supplies and shipping them to Ghana for many years. The association is active in the Brong-Ahafo region and in the towns of Wenchi and Nkoranza. Rural youths there are supported locally with this aid in their education.
As in many previous years, a container will be packed this year in Hildesheim with the help of Arbeit und Dritte Welt e.V.. A considerable amount of the relief supplies has already been collected from all over Lower Saxony, inspected, partially refurbished and packed.
Ghana e.V. and ADW are now waiting for a delivery date from the German government-owned GIZ, from which a transport subsidy has been applied for.
As part of the “Low Energy Houses” exhibition organized by the Lower Saxony Chamber of Architects, our specialist workshop is exhibiting lamps made from industrial scrap using LED technology.
The exhibition opened on September 27, 2011 and our lamps attracted a lot of attention – they do not require mains power. Instead, a small solar module charges rechargeable batteries. The design allows continuous operation for approx. 8 hours without recharging in between.
Participation in this exhibition was made possible by the Hildesheim Architects and Engineers Association (AIV).
The 1 World Week is taking place in Hildesheim for the second time. This time in the Andreaspassage and on Hoher Weg, Hildesheim’s central shopping street.
From 26 September to 1 October, 31 initiatives, associations, schools and organizations will be showcasing their wide range of activities. A variety of evening events provide an interesting cultural framework.
Anette Brummel and Mauritz Halbach traveled all the way from Remscheid with a VW bus full of donations in kind – the network of Ghana e.V. in Lower Saxony’s rural youth reaches that far!
We were impressed when we received the donations and learned how useful and effective the aid from Germany is in Ghana: Anette Brummel should know – she has already been there.
